About these notes

Packet notes is a small reference notebook about Unix systems and network troubleshooting.

The emphasis is on reading what a system is doing before changing it. Each note covers a narrow task and keeps the commands close to the explanation.

Examples, not a system inventory

Hostnames, addresses and service names in the examples are illustrative. These pages do not publish the configuration or live status of the machine serving them.

Scope

The commands are intended for Linux environments with the relevant tools installed. Output and available options may differ between distributions and versions. Refer to the linked manuals for the complete command reference.
